JORDI LABANDA

My Beginnings as an Illustrator

I grew up in Barcelona, fascinated by the sophisticated characters featured in the movies aired on television—from Hitchcock’s psychological thrillers to Douglas Sirk’s melodramas. I was also deeply drawn to Walt Disney’s films. I found immense joy in admiring the fashion photographs in magazines around the house, as well as in observing the design of objects and architecture.

With a talent for drawing, I began sketching all these movie characters and the settings in which they moved from a very young age. I drew so much that my parents struggled to keep up with buying me enough notebooks.

PROFESSIONAL ILLUSTRATOR

When I reached adulthood and had to choose a profession, I felt that pursuing illustration was simpler than studying film or architecture. It also seemed like the perfect way to combine my two passions: drawing and storytelling. Even though I hadn’t studied illustration formally, I knew there was a place for me.

OWN STYLE

When I started to take my first steps as an illustrator, the iconography stored in my head came to light. I knew I wanted to mix the glamour of classic Hollywood with Disney aesthetics and put it together with fashion trends and the world of design and architecture.

I threw all these concepts into the shaker and the result was a “Lifestyle” style of illustration that helped shape the aesthetic of the early 21st century.

WALLPAPER, MY GATEWAY TO MAJOR EDITORIAL PUBLICATIONS

My editorial work for Wallpaper* magazine, which combined the drawing of stylish characters in spectacular destinations surrounded by the most exquisite design, was a real bombshell and opened a new section in the world of illustration, creating unusual opportunities for the sector and expanding the range of consumers.

EDITORIAL ILLUSTRATOR

From my beginnings until today my characters have appeared in iconic publications such as Vogue Japan, The Daily Telegraph, The New York Times, La Repubblica, Vogue USA, Vogue Italia, AD, Harper’s Bazaar, the aforementioned Wallpaper*, Icon, Candy, Apartamento or La Vanguardia Magazine, where I have published my own weekly section for more than twenty-two years.

COMMERCIAL ILLUSTRATOR

As a commercial illustrator I have collaborated with amazing brands such as Louis Vuitton, Carolina Herrera, Moncler, L’Óreal, American Express, Grand Marnier, Pepsi, Knoll, Four Seasons, Park Hyatt, Adidas, Reebok, Swarovski, Nissan, Mango, Zara or Copa América 2024 among many others. My stationary collections of notebooks and pens deserve a special mention, which, to this day, are iconic material for a whole generation. I feel very proud of this part of my work.

Whatch making off here:

COLLABORATION WITH WOODY ALLEN

One of the happiest moments of my life came recently, when Woody Allen asked me to do the poster for his film Rifkin’s Festival. After receiving his call, I went out for three laps around the block to make myself interesting and gain some time before accepting the assignment, being aware that things like this don’t happen every day.

MY OWN ONLINE STORE

What I like most in the world is drawing, looking at photography books and watching movies -not always in this order-. Maybe that’s why my illustrations have such a cinematic and narrative atmosphere. I’ve always liked to tell stories through my drawings and I think that’s the biggest link between me and my audience.

I decided to open a online gallery of artprints and offer the possibility to purchase limited edition reproductions of some of my most iconic works. All the logistics of this online shop are completely carbon neutral, so all prints, framed lithographs and sustainable shipping are certified carbon neutral. Today we have managed to expand the online store and ship worldwide while maintaining the seal of quality and sustainability.
